RELICS OF SAINT PADRE PIO TO VISIT ST. THOMAS MORE CHURCH IN NARRAGANSETT ON FINAL NORTHEAST STOP OF NATIONAL TOUR

 Padre Pio was known for his miraculous powers of healing and knowledge.

 (Narragansett, RI) – Local residents will have their final New England opportunity to view relics of the renowned 20th century mystic and healer, Saint Padre Pio of Pietrelcina – better known as Padre Pio – at St. Thomas More Church, on October 1st, 2017. The event is the last New England stop of a national tour to commemorate the 130th anniversary of Padre Pio’s birth, and the 15th anniversary of his canonization.

Relics of Saint Pio will be on display for veneration from 11:00 AM – 11:00 PM. Auxiliary Bishop Robert C. Evans, Diocese of Providence, will celebrate a special Mass at 4:00 PM. The Mass and veneration of relics will be simulcast live at https://livestream.com/STM/PadrePio and on the St. Thomas More parish facebook page https://www.facebook.com/StThomasMoreRI/.

Saint Pio was born Francesco Forgione in Pietrelcina, Italy, on May 25, 1887. He entered the Capuchin order at age 15 and was ordained a priest in 1910 at the age of 23. During his lifetime, Padre Pio was known for his miraculous powers of healing and knowledge. He bore the stigmata, wounds that correspond to the crucifixion wounds of Jesus Christ. Padre Pio dedicated much of his priesthood to hearing confessions, and people traveled from around the world to see him. Pope John Paul II canonized the Saint in 2002.

The relics of Saint Pio available for public veneration at St. Thomas More Church will include:

  • Saint Pio’s glove;
  • Saint Pio’s crusts of the wounds;
  • Cotton-gauze with Saint Pio’s blood stains;
  • A lock of Saint Pio’s hair;
  • Saint Pio’s mantle;
  • Saint Pio’s handkerchief soaked with his sweat hours before he died.

More information about St. Pio can be found at http://www.saintpiofoundation.org. The Saint Pio Foundation promotes awareness of St. Pio and his mission by working with institutions and individuals who share the same vision to serve “those in need of relief of suffering.” Funds raised by the Saint Pio Foundation are used to provide grants to American Catholic healthcare, educational, social, religious, and cultural partner organizations.

Sunday, October 1, 2017; 11:00 AM – 11:00 PM at St. Thomas More Church. Please do not plan to park at or near the church. Plan to take the free trolley from Narragansett High School.
