Meeting Minutes – March 7, 2017

E. McLaughlin called the meeting to order and the meeting opened with a prayer.

In attendance at this meeting were Fr. Taillon, Deacon Sullivan, council members Ed McLaughlin, Victor Primavera, Eleanor McSally, Caroline Murphy, Patricia Reidy, Kenya Wilkins, Catie Carver & Matt Mannix AND liaisons Lynn Bamford (Festival), Jackie Baglini (Our Lady’s Guild), Joe Robenhymer (Knights) & Connie DiOrio (Religious Education) AND Pati Paolella (Staff).

  • P. Reidy discussed the conclusion to the Year of Mercy, K. Wilkins discussed the Election Day Adoration and P. Paolella & L. Bamford discussed the Ministries Fair.

The parish is in need of more Eucharistic Ministers and Lectors, especially lectors at St. Thomas More Church.  Father Casey’s upcoming Mission will be held on April 2, 3 and 4 at St. Thomas More Church.  “All-day” Confessions are scheduled at St. Veronica’s Chapel for March 25 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.  The sound systems in both churches have recently been upgraded.

Vacation Bible Camp is scheduled for August 7-11.  C. Diorio will be working with Missie Antone and K. Wilkins on that project.  First Holy Communion will be held on May 7 at 1:00 pm at St. Thomas More Church.  Confirmation will be held on May 21.

J. Baglini discussed some upcoming events.  On October 13, The Sun Danced, a film 100-year anniversary of the Our Lady of Fatima, will be shown at the Pier Cinema.  The council decided to charge $2.00 for tickets to the movie.  On October 10, the Day of Reckoning is scheduled at Christian Brothers.  The Guild is currently organizing a Right-to-Life Baby Shower in May.

The 2017 festival will be held on June 17, 2017.  There will be a meeting of the “chairs” of committees at 6:00 pm on March 27.  The rides will include the slide a train.  The “Bubble Guy” will return as he was popular.  The festival still is searching for music from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm.  Second To None will play from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

The well-received event will take place again on July 6, 2017, which is the anniversary of St. Thomas More’s beheading.  The Knights will work with the Boy Scouts to ensure the stage is set up properly.  The event will start at 8:00 pm as sunset is at approximately 8:20 pm.

J. Robenhymer updated the council on the Jacob’s Ladder event in Jamaica (January 14-21) and the Habitat for Humanity effort in Coventry.  He discussed the March for Life and the appreciation of the marchers for Vice President Pence’s address to the marchers.  He discussed upcoming events:

  • The weekly Stations & Soup on Fridays
  • The Candy Drive to raise funds for the mentally disabled (April 27-29)
  • The May 28 Breakfast at St. Veronica’s
  • The May 15-22 Food Drive
  • The June 10 Mass on the Mountain
  • The August 6 Special Needs Fishing Trip
  • The August 19 Golf Tournament to raise funds for vocations
  • The Enders Island Retreat, scheduled for May 12-13

  • The Consecration(s) to Mary is an Ancient church tradition that Fr. Taillon explained can lead up to the Assumption of Mary.  It basically is a 33-day consecration and would be appropriate during this Marian Year.  The council discussed incorporating this tradition into the July 14-August 15 timeframe.
  • P. Paolella reported that the website had “crumbled” and a new effort was underway to update the website.
  • Fr. Taillon spoke about the new St. Thomas More APP, updated website and stronger technology presence.  He discussed the 7-year effort to work with a company called LIVESTREAM to improve our streaming of church services.
  • The Mission Trip fundraiser will be held at the Dunes Club this year on Sept. 22 at 6:00 pm.  The theme will be a Caribbean theme.
  • Fr. Taillon proposed the idea of a pilgrimage to Washington, D.C.  It would likely include an overnight stay.
  • The Marriage Fellowship will begin with a March 11 “witness” on marriage.  Fr. Taillon indicated that he would like to see this fellowship grow.

Fr. Taillon announced that Joe Robenhymer will be awarded the Lumen Gentium Award for Outstanding Parish Service.  This award ceremony will take place at Twin River Casino on May 17.  Joe is being recognized for his devotion to our parish and for his efforts in growing the Knights.  He encouraged the council members to come to the event.
