St. Thomas More Parish Council

Meeting Minutes – July 19, 2016

E. McLaughlin called the meeting to order.

Fr. Taillon opened with a prayer.

J. Robenhymer made a motion to approve the minutes of the March 14, 2016 meeting.  The motion was seconded by V. Primavera and unanimously approved.

In attendance at this meeting were Fr. Taillon, Deacon Sullivan, council members Kathleen Costello, Ed McLaughlin, Caroline Murphy, Eleanor McSally, Kathleen Costello, Patricia Reidy, Victor Primavera, Kenya Wilkins and Matt Mannix AND liaisons Lynn Bamford (Festival), Jackie Baglini (Our Lady’s Guild) & Joe Robenhymer (Knights) AND Missie Antone (Religious Education) AND Pati Paolella (Staff).

LITURGY – DEACON SULLIVAN

The churches will be on the Summer Schedule through Labor Day.  The “Life in the Spirit” seminars will be held on July 21-25.  The Assumption of Mary is NOT a Holy Day of Obligation this year, so that frees up the schedule slightly.  The search is underway for altar servers and additional lectors.

YEAR OF MERCY – FATHER TAILLON AND PAT REIDY

The Year of Mercy ends at the start of Advent.  P. Reidy discussed confessions, a Rosary or a Mass.  Fr. Taillon stated that each diocese has a Holy Door and each cathedral has a Door of Mercy.  He and P. Reidy also discussed a trip to the Divine Mercy Shrine in Stockbridge, Mass.  In the end, P. Reidy and Fr. Taillon will work together to determine whether a cathedral trip or a visit to the Divine Mercy Shrine is a better option.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION – MISSIE ANTONE

M. Antone discussed Stubenville East, from which the students just returned.  She also discussed the upcoming Vacation Bible School, which will be taught by her and Connie DiOrio.  She stated there were Monday afternoon openings for Religious Education teachers.  Fr. Taillon stated that male teachers were especially needed.  Confirmation classes range from 28-40 students.  M. Antone discussed the Adventureland youth event, scheduled for August 8, 2016.

OUR LADY’S GUILD – JACKIE BAGLINI

The May baby shower was well-attended, with 19 women in attendance.  The Mass of the Anointing is scheduled for the Spring of 2017.  Sue Davis has joined the Guild.  Fr. Taillon thanked the members for their work on pro-life issues, devotion to Mary and baking at the Parish Festival.

FESTIVAL – LYNN BAMFORD

The festival was a success, and L. Bamford thanked Ann Murphy for her role as co-chair.  The overall revenue increased by nearly 30%, but the event itself basically broke even (lost approximately $300.00).  The food distribution went smoother than in the past.  The rides were monitored more closely so that fewer attendees could go on the rides for free.  The Berries Go Round were expensive ($4,000.00), but popular.  The Bubble Man was popular.  There was discussion to replace Toe Jam with something more interactive, such as children’s karaoke, a choo-choo train ride or St. Thomas More’s Got Talent.

FIRESIDE VIGIL – JOE ROBENHYMBER

The event was well-attended and the Boy Scouts helped to serve the attendees.  The stories with the three characters, including individuals playing the roles of St. Thomas More and his daughter, brought the event together.  As a result of the vigil, there was no procession this year.  V. Primavera said, “let’s do it again.”  The town’s Parks and Recreation Department was cooperative.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS – JOE ROBENHYMER

The May Food Drive and Breakfast were both successful.  Recruiting of new Knights was the most successful it has ever been.  The St. Edmunds Retreat, with 25 participants, was also successful.  In June, V. Primavera led a 5th Sunday Rosary.  Mass on the Mountain for 2017 is scheduled for June 3, 2017.  The August 14, 2016 Special Needs Fishing Trip is coming up and the Narragansett Lions Club is partnering with the Knights on that event.  It will be followed by a cookout.  On August 20, 2016, the 4th Annual Golf Tournament Fundraiser will be held at Richmond Country Club.  J. Robenhymer encouraged people to sponsor tees.  Other upcoming events include the October 21, 2016 Adoration and Rosary and the October 28, 2016 cards-and-bingo event for those with special needs at O’Brien’s Pub.  Finally, six Knights have signed up for the Men’s Construction Mission Trip, scheduled for January 14-21 in Jamaica.  The focus of this trip will be the building of cinderblock homes and the mission is run by Mustard Seed.

MISCELLANEOUS – PATI PAOLELLA

  • Ready for feedback on website maintenance.
  • C. Murphy will be heading up Instagram account.
  • About 150 people are involved on facebook and the Aleppo video went all around the world.
  • Please take photos at key events and send them to Pati.

PASTOR’S REPORT – FR. TAILLON

Fr. Taillon welcomed the new Assistant Pastor, Fr. Kieran, who briefly addressed the council after having just arrived in town.

  • The Stewardship Fair will be held on October 1 and 2, 2016.  This fair is a marketing event of different interest groups of the parish.  Volunteers or a subcommittee will be needed to make it a success.  The interest groups (ministries) should each have their own bulletin board/science fair board to market each ministry.  L. Bamford and P. Paolella volunteered to spearhead this fair.
  • On Sept. 4, 2016, Mother Theresa will be canonized.
  • The Blue Mass for the Police will be held on Sept. 25, 2016 at 11:00 am at St. Veronica’s Chapel.

NEXT MEETINGS

  • December 13

CLOSING PRAYER AND ADJOURNMENT
